Sister Augusta’s first full-length adventure takes her and her trusty squad of Sororitas to the Shrine World of Opal, gleaming beneath its halo as it celebrates the days-long Festival of its Saviour and Martyr, Saint Veres.
Augusta needs to collect Veres’ skull, but the relic is the Festival’s centrepiece, and necessary to celebrate its height. Agreeing to relinquish the relic once the event is over, the Governor invites the Sister Superior and her squad to stay and participate, as a blessing from the Emperor Himself.
Meanwhile, Opal-born cadet Kamilla earns a boon from her commanding officer: she can take an evening’s leave to go and visit her uncle, a priest who works with the poor and disenfranchised at the outskirt of Opal’s main city. These people are desperate and hungry, denied the Festival’s holiness. Forgotten and lost in sin, the Shrine World’s many luxuries are not for the likes of them.
They also hide a terrible secret: a genestealer cult, spreading through the people.
Soon, the attacks on the city begin. Lashing out from the sewers, and massing on the far side of the river, the cult begins to rise. The Governor refuses to halt the celebration and Augusta takes charge of both defence and offence, trying to hold the cult back. The local militia are swiftly out of their depth and cadet Kamilla, awed by the presence of the Sisters, is caught in centre of the madness.
Who and where are the cult’s leaders? Can Augusta defend the city, protect the Festival, defeat the cult, and stop the incoming tyranid swarm? And will the forces of the Bloody Rose arrive in time to save Opal?
Brutal and savage, this is Augusta’s greatest moment, refusing her own martyrdom as she tries to defend a world.
